Craftivist Group
Craftivism (Craft + Activism) is a growing worldwide movement where the general public use their art and craft skills for political purposes. It is about making the world a better place, one handmade object at a time. We increasingly seem to live in a world that emphasises negative messages about things and people not being good enough, about saying anything that isn’t perfect isn’t right, or where specific groups are demonised and blamed for many of the decisions made by those in power. Where negativity and blame are the norm, acts of kindness, whether to ourselves or to others, can become acts of resistance and subversion.
As Betsy Greer, who coined the term ‘craftivism’, puts it
“Craftivism is the practice of engaged creativity, especially regarding political or social causes. By using their creative energy to help make the world a better place, craftivists help bring about positive change via personalized activism. Craftivism allows practitioners to customize their particular skills to address particular causes.”
So, what does CommunARTy believe craftivism is? We believe that craftivism can help to build a stronger sense of community through creating and sharing small acts of kindness (known as Guerilla Acts of Kindness).
